I’ve been to Barcelona often but always for a short time.
The first time with Mom and my sister at Christmas years ago. A couple of days just us, and I remember a lot of that experience.
I’ve come back again, on a couple of occasions, with the cruise ships, for a few hours.
This time we had a stopover in Barcelona with our flight to Valencia, only a couple of hours.
From the airport in half an hour we arrived at the Sagrada Familia (always under renovation every time I saw it, it seems it will be finished in 2026, after almost a century and a half). From the metro you exit right below the basilica. And almost opposite there is a Starbucks.
We had just enough time to order a frappuccino and cappuccino, and Apple started to feel bad. She hadn’t even eaten all day. She needed a medicine.
I left her with the luggages sitting on a bench in front of the cathedral, in poor condition, and I ran to look for a pharmacy one kilometer away.
Luckily I found what she needed and in a short time she recovered.
She even wanted to take some photos, and this was everything we were able to do before getting back on the metro and returning to the airport.
The entrance to the Sagrada Familia was sold out all day, however.
I’ve always appreciated its unique architecture, the neo-Gothic exterior combined with the characteristic nativity facade by Gaudí. But the amazement enchants when you enter inside, and if I had to describe it with one word for me it would be: visceral.
I visited it years ago with Mom and still looking at it now gives me the same feeling. Visceral. As if it emerged from the bowels of the earth, as if they were the meanders of a primordial forest that precedes the world – or underlies it. Or as if they were the neurons of the creative divine brain. Something ancestral – and visceral. In which houses the principle of everything, ourselves and of our life.
It’s a crazy construction. If you are looking for some pictures of the Sagrada Familia inside on Google, you will understand what I mean. With Mom we went up to the high tower to see all Barcelona from there.
We went back to the airport, checked in for Valencia.
Our hotel was located on a main street full of shops, to the left of Mango, near the metro exit and right in front (!) there was Starbucks! The life’s surprises, such a big joy!
We went out to dinner and take a tour of Valencia, but shortly afterwards Apple needed another tachipirine and a lot of rest. We went back to the room without even finishing dinner.
But from the next day she was strong as a lion, fortunately.
Valencia has a very elegant architecture due to the little seen, but we quickly discovered that Valencians speak very little English.

Sono stata a Barcellona spesso ma sempre per poco tempo.
La prima volta con Mamma e mia sorella a Natale anni fa. Un paio di giorni solo noi, e ricordo molto di quella esperienza.
Sono tornata ancora, in un paio di occasioni, con le navi da crociera, per qualche ora.
Questa volta avevamo scalo a Barcellona con il nostro volo per Valencia, la sosta è stata di un paio d’ore soltanto.
Dall’aeroporto in mezz’ora siamo arrivate alla Sagrada Familia (sempre in ristrutturazione ogni volta che l’ho vista, sembra sarà finita nel 2026, dopo quasi un secolo e mezzo). Dalla metro si esce proprio sotto la basilica. E quasi di fronte c’è uno Starbucks.
Abbiamo avuto giusto il tempo di ordinare frappuccino e cappuccino, che Mela ha iniziato a sentirsi male. Non aveva neanche mangiato per tutto il giorno. Le serviva una tachipirina.
L’ho lasciata con i bagagli seduta su una panchina di fronte alla cattedrale, in pessime condizioni, e sono corsa a cercare una farmacia ad un chilometro e due.
Per fortuna ho trovato quello che le serviva e in poco tempo si è ripresa.
Ha voluto anche scattare alcune foto, ed è stato tutto quello che siamo riuscite a fare prima di risalire in metro e tornare all’aeroporto.
L’ingresso alla Sagrada Familia era esaurito per tutto il giorno, ad ogni modo.
Ho sempre apprezzato la sua architettura unica, il neogotico esterno unito alla caratteristica facciata della natività ad opera di Gaudí. Ma lo stupore incanta quando si entra al suo interno, e se dovessi descriverla con una parola per me sarebbe: viscerale.
L’ho visitata anni fa con Mamma e tutt’ora a guardarla mi trasmette la stessa sensazione. Viscerale. Come se fuoriuscisse dalle viscere della terra, come se fossero i meandri di una foresta primordiale che precede il mondo – o lo sottostà. O come se fossero i neuroni del creativo cervello divino. Qualcosa di ancestrale – e viscerale. In cui alberga il principio di tutto, noi stessi e la vita.
È una costruzione pazzesca. Se cercate qualche immagine della Sagrada Familia al suo interno, capirete cosa intendo. Con Mamma salimmo fino alla torre alta per vedere tutta Barcellona da lì.
Siamo tornate in aeroporto, check-in per Valencia.
Il nostro hotel si trovava su una strada principale piena di negozi, alla sinistra di Mango, vicino all’uscita della metro e proprio di fronte (!) c’era Starbucks! Le sorprese della vita, che gioia immensa!
Siamo scese a cenare e fare un giro per Valencia, ma poco dopo Mela ha avuto bisogno di un’altra tachipirina e tanto riposo. Siamo tornate in stanza senza neanche finire la cena.
Però dal giorno dopo è stata forte come un leone, per fortuna.
Valencia ha un’architettura molto elegante per il poco visto, ma abbiamo subito scoperto che i valenciani parlano poco l’inglese.

Conosco Barcellona sopratutto grazie ai racconti e alle immagini di uno dei miei figli, che ci è stato questa estate in vacanza. Sicuramente la Catalogna ha una architettura assolutamente distinguibile e riconoscibile.

I have ALWAYS wanted to visit Barcelona and see La Sagrada Familia. I majored in Spanish Literature and Culture in college, and just fell in love with the works of Gaudi. Ben also gained a huge appreciation for architectural beauty on our recent trip to Italy, so I know he’d love it too. Flights to Barcelona are always on my radar these days!
